POSTPONED DUE TO SUPER BOWL
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2012  2:00 PM
IF I LOVED YOU
Bobbi Carrey & Will McMillan
with Doug Hammer on piano

Men always want to be a woman's first love—women like to be a man's last romance. Oscar Wilde

Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love. Albert Einstein

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Nothing spoils the taste of peanut butter like unrequited love. Charlie Brown

What the world really needs is more love and less paperwork. Pearl Bailey

Everyone seems to have something to say about love – artists, scientists, inventors, cartoon characters and of course composers and lyricists. Regardless of the time or the place, love songs seem to range from passionate to parental; romantic to raunchy; sacred to sarcastic. This show includes songs by Rodgers, Hart & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Amanda McBroom, Irving Berlin, Michel Legrand, Jonathan Larson, Johnny Mercer and others in a musical celebration of love; unrequited, requited and not-so-requited.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Bobbi Carrey and Will McMillan to hear what songwriters from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood have to say on the controversial, universal, and ubiquitous topic of love.

NEVER NEVERLAND
Songs From On and Off Broadway
Bobbi Carrey & Will McMillan
with Doug Hammer on piano

“Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Broadway Baby,” and “Lullaby of Broadway” – Like Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood, and Motown, Broadway has long been a central part of our musical culture and a major source of memorable songs – songs that cut across time and place. “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” from Showboat; “There’s No Business Like Show Business” from Annie Get Your Gun; “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story; “Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks; “Night and Day” from The Gay Divorcee; “I’ll Cover You” from Rent – the list goes on and on and on and on and on.

It was on Broadway where incredible talents such as Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, and Stephen Sondheim emerged and defined the times in words and music.

Although the theatres have changed, composers have changed, and shows have changed, Broadway survives. Join vocalists Bobbi Carrey and Will McMillan for a walk down “The Great White Way,” as they revive showstoppers from on and off Broadway.

Johnny Mercer is the greatest American lyricist alive. I could no more write a lyric like one of his than fly.
Oscar Hammerstein

Johnny Mercer wrote songs for 90 motion pictures, won four Academy Awards, wrote six Broadway musicals, founded Capitol Records and created the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

His songs spanned the early days of the Swing Era through the mid-sixties progressive rock era. For five decades he collaborated with America’s greatest composers, including Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Andre Previn, Henry Mancini and many others.

From “Accentuate the Positive,” “Come Rain or Come Shine” to “P.S. I Love You,” “On the Atchinson, Topeka and the Santa Fe,” and “Skylark,” MOSTLY MERCER explores Johnny Mercer’s success as a singer, lyricist, composer and businessman.
